“SMARTfit has become a great tool for our older kids with autism. They are motivated to play again and again to beat their score.”
OT4Kids Therapeutic Learning Center has been using SMARTfit since 2017 for training their kids with autism. Last week TJ Fairchild, our senior trainer, stopped by to provide some additional training to go over the latest programming updates which include some fun games designed specifically for kids with autism. TJ asked the team to share about their experience using SMARTfit.
Amanda Flyckt, business manager and Dr. of OT who organized the training, shared her experience: ”
“SMARTfit has become a great tool for our older kids with autism. We use it for strengthening and coordination as they are motivated to play again and again to beat their score.”
With older kids, I like using the equations and spelling games and for younger ones, I like the seeking games and knock the lights out. There are so many great ways of grading activities to find a “just right” challenge for each child.
Sometimes we add a balance component by having them stand on a balance board or Bosu ball or we have them push the targets with a weighted ball for more upper body strengthening and heavy work proprioceptive input for sensory regulation.”
Kimberly Koretoff, OTD, OTR/L, SWC, CAS, Doctor of Occupational Therapy and owner, shared her experience:
“Using the various activities, our kids are able to work on a variety of skills. Their reaction times and accuracy to hit the targets greatly improve over consecutive trials, demonstrating motor learning and quickened motor responses. We are able to work on static and dynamic postural responses, balance, and proximal stability crucial for participation in playground games and Physical Education classes.
Furthermore, the numbers and letters games allow our therapists to address sequencing, letter and number identification, visual discrimination, and visual tracking/scanning abilities, essential for school readiness. We also enjoy using the tracking and scanning exercises, the impulse control exercises to enhance cognitive functioning. Our older clientele (7 years+) really enjoy the various games and our ability to increase or decrease the level of difficulty helps to adjust the challenge to match each child’s ability.
SMARTfit’s data tracking feature has been very useful in gaining objective data to assess progress on timing and sequencing and overall cognitive processing.”
We asked Kimberly whether there was any excitement around the latest upgrade?
“I LOVE the metronome update. I think that is a great tool and we frequently use metronomes with other programming (PACE/AMPS, Bal-A-Vis-X, Interactive Metronome, etc.) so it will be a great addition to our tool box.”
